Explanation: This floating ring is the size of a galaxy. In fact, it is a galaxy -- or at least part of one: the photogenic Sombrero Galaxy, one of the largest galaxies in the nearby Virgo Cluster of Galaxies. The dark band of dust that obscures the mid-section of the Sombrero Galaxy in optical light actually glows brightly in infrared light. The featured image, digitally sharpened, shows the infrared glow, recently recorded by the orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope, superposed in false-color on an existing image taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in optical light. The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as M104, spans about 50,000 light years across and lies 28 million light years away. M104 can be seen with a small telescope in the direction of the constellation Virgo.

Explicación: Este anel flotante é do tamaño dunha galaxia. De feito, é unha galaxia, ou polo menos parte dunha: a fotoxénica galaxia do Sombreiro, unha das galaxias máis grandes no cercano cúmulo de galaxias de Virgo. A banda escura de po que escurece a sección media da galaxia do Sombreiro (ou Chapeu) en luz visible, realmente brilla intensamente en luz infravermella. A imaxe mostrada, retocada dixitalmente, mostra o brillo infravermello recentemente gravado polo telescopio espacial Spitzer (en órbita), superposto en falsa cor sobre outra imaxe existente tomada polo telescopio espacial Hubble da NASA en luz visible. A galaxia do Capeu, tamén coñecida como M104, esténdese ao longo duns 50.000 anos luz e atópase a 28 millóns de anos luz de distancia. A M104 pode verse cun pequeno telescopio na dirección da constelación Virgo.
