Comet Leonard, the brightest comet of the year, made its approach closest to the Earth on December 12 and should be visible through binoculars and durant telescopes these days, if the time allows it.

Known officially as comet C / 2021 A1, Comet Leonard was discovered in January by astronomer Gregory J. Leonard Scientist of the Infrared Lemmon Infrared Observatory in Arizona. Sunday passed at a distance of 34 million km from the earth, something like halfway between the orbit of our planet and Venus, but it was still not visible to the naked eye.

Comet Leonard is a unique comet for star observers, as it takes about 80,000 years to go through the orbit and return again to surround the sun. As it is a very Ténuese comet, we must have a telescope or binoculars to look at the firmament and perceive it.

Comet Leonard is looking against west-southwest, 30 minutes after sunset, just above the horizon, below the Venus planet that is the most looks in the sky, apart from Saturn and Jupiter, as seen in the lower image.

During these nights, Comet Leonard will be a few degrees on the west-southwest horizon. We will look in this direction after spending 30 minutes from the sunset. In theory it must begin to be seen about 2 degrees on the unobstructed horizon, like the marine horizon, during the little twilight that begins at 6:00 and ends at 7:00 p.m. Again, this is the best time to locate the Comet (Note: Your fist closed with the extended arm covers about 10 degrees of the night sky, so the width of a finger occupies an approximate angular space of 2 degrees).

Depending on the dust and gas that drops by passing near the sun, it will be more or less visible during the next days until it quickly diffinters for its rapid alignment. Soon it will only be accessible through powerful telescopes.
